XR Exec Talks with Christie

Name: Larry Paul
Title: Executive Director of Technology and Custom Solutions
Company: Christie
LAVNCH [CODE]: We know your title, but what do you actually do at Christie?
LARRY PAUL: I have two primary roles at Christie: one of them is future technology exploration and development, and the other is custom solutions fulfillment.
I investigate and apply technologies that we use in the solutions we create for customers, and it could be a projector, accessory, or a complete visualization or simulation system. My focus is on creating technologies that enable our customers to do things they’ve never done before, and my specialty is high frame rates in 2D and 3D.
The other part of my role is managing the custom solutions team. We work on delivering complete solutions that start with design through installation and then post-installation support. Many of our customers bring us complex challenges and are often seeking to use technology in new ways, which often involve innovating some very cool and interesting advanced technologies.
LAVNCH [CODE]: In your opinion, what is the most exciting thing about extended reality?
LP: I’m excited that it’s finally becoming more of a mainstream idea. It’s not this far out concept that only a few people got to see in a lab somewhere, but it’s available to a wider audience. As a result, this will enable new opportunities because, as people say, ‘the technology is great, but if it only could do this’, it will propel the technology forward and fuel a new generation of users.
LAVNCH [CODE]: Where do you see the XR market heading in the next year?
LP: I think we’ll see a continuation of the evolution of the market. I don’t think anything will happen that will be so radical as to change that market direction, but instead XR will continue the same course that it’s been on for a long time. XR is an enabling technology that allows storytellers to create experiences, and whether it’s for scientific or entertainment purposes, it’s about exploring a new environment.
What new XR products and services are on the horizon for your company? While we can’t divulge specifics, I can say that we’ll continue to do what we’ve done for decades, which is to listen, learn, and understand our customers’ needs and the challenges that they are trying to overcome, and then create technologies and solutions to solve those problems.
LAVNCH [CODE]: Anything else you’d like to add?
LP: XR offers another opportunity for us to create exceptional experiences for our customers to use in science, facility and community management, and entertainment systems that include: dark rides, CAVES, immersive experiences, and much more. And as with all our technology and solutions, including XR, we’ll continue to innovate to develop technology that meets our customers’ needs now and in the future.
