Beyond the Bleachers: Emerging Tech in Stadiums and Arenas

Emerging Tech in Stadiums

In the fast-paced world of sports and entertainment, stadiums and arenas strive to offer more than just a venue for events. They stand as modern coliseums, not merely venues for events but spaces to shape unforgettable immersive experiences for fans worldwide, captivating audiences and keep them coming back for more. Leveraging emerging technologies has become a crucial strategy in achieving this goal to maintain a competitive advantage, revolutionizing the way fans engage with live events.

Jason Young, national sales manager at Sony Electronics, sheds light on the myriad of obstacles integrators face in deploying AV technologies. “One of the biggest challenges is having to utilize aged infrastructure with cutting-edge products. Being able to ‘cut the cord’ and leverage drastically improved network infrastructure allows for the ability to deliver content and experiences previously prevented due to the older, limiting infrastructure,” he stated. In response to this challenge, Sony Electronics has pioneered solutions like the PRO BRAVIA displays with system on chip technology. Young highlights the potential of these displays, which deliver stunning visuals and flexible content management while working around the limitations of outdated infrastructure in the spaces.

To help understand how to work with the important elements of fan engagement in the modern stadium experience, David Phelps, head of the display division at Samsung Electronics America, said “Stadiums and arenas want to create an immersive experience that begins from the moment a fan arrives,” he emphasized, “In the parking lot, stadiums can install EV charging stations integrated with displays that provide fans with helpful information such as venue details, game facts, concessionsm and amenities. Upon entering the gates at the stadiums, fans can find Samsung Kiosks—all-in-one, self-service touchscreen display solutions that enable smoother entry, more efficient purchases and faster food and beverage service. High-resolution Samsung LED screens display easy-to-see directions to help fans find their seats and other services throughout the game. They also provide a new channel to showcase dynamic content and advertising to elevate engagement.” These technologies not only enhance every step of the fan journey, from the parking lot to the seats, but also elevate the overall atmosphere of the venue.

Bradan Dotson, executive producer at Dimensional Innovations (DI), shed light on the innovative approaches employed to address crowd management, safety, and ADA compliance within stadium environments. “We have been lucky enough to work with various partners that utilize technologies such as AI-driven surveillance and crowd density analysis tools to enhance crowd management and safety,” Dotson revealed.

Dotson emphasizes DI’s commitment to designing activations with a keen focus on ingress and egress and accessibility. “At DI, we specifically design our activations with things like ingress/egress and accessibility in mind,” he stated This holistic approach ensures that every aspect of the fan experience is carefully considered, from the moment attendees arrive at the venue to their departure. By seamlessly integrating with existing infrastructure, DI’s solutions enhance the efficacy of safety protocols, ensuring swift and coordinated responses to emergencies that may arise.

Elaborating on the pivotal role played by advancements in network infrastructure and connectivity in facilitating the seamless integration of various AV systems within stadiums and arenas, Ross Brett, application manager at L-Acoustics, shed light on the transformative impact of these technological developments. “Network infrastructure advances have been essential to future-proofing systems,” Brett affirmed, “Signals can be taken from any part of the building and routed to any part of the system at the click of a button.”

This streamlined approach eliminates the need for extensive cabling or additional equipment, simplifying the integration process and reducing installation complexity. The convergence of network infrastructure advancements and AV integration empowers stadium and arena spaces to deliver immersive experiences while remaining agile and responsive to changing demands. These insights shed light on the critical role of technology in shaping the future of live entertainment venues, where seamless integration fosters innovation and enhances the overall fan experience.

In conclusion, the integration of emerging technologies into stadiums and arenas represents a transformative leap forward in the live entertainment industry. Through the insights shared by industry experts like Jason Young, David Phelps, Bradan Dotson, and Ross Brett, it’s evident that these technologies are not only overcoming infrastructural challenges but also revolutionizing fan engagement, safety protocols, and accessibility standards.

From cutting-edge displays to immersive experiences and holistic approach to design, each innovation is driving the evolution of the stadium experience. As technology continues to further advance, stadiums and arenas will remain at the forefront of innovation, delivering unparalleled experiences to captivate audiences worldwide. Through strategic partnerships, innovative design principles, and a commitment to safety and accessibility, the future of stadium entertainment promises to be immersive, engaging, and unforgettable.

In this landscape, one thing is clear: the integration of emerging tech in live events venues is not solely about enhancing the fan experience; it’s about redefining the very essence of live entertainment. With each innovation, stadiums and arenas are transforming into vibrant hubs of culture, community, and excitement, where every attendee is welcomed, engaged, and leaving inspired.
